Rally Obedience (sometimes called “Rally-O”) is a different take on Formal Obedience. Rally-O encourages human/canine verbal communication and moving in harmony while the team navigates a course filled with signs that indicate to the team obedience type exercises such as sits, downs and stays.
Formal Obedience focuses on the teams ability to listen and perform while their judge talks them through exercises in a similar fashion. Formal obedience typically requires a bit more precision but both sports can be tricky for teams.
Both Rally- O and Formal Obedience can be a rewarding way to increase your dogs understanding of daily skills that they may use. They both require you and your dog to have a great understanding of heel position and have a good generalization of skills around a variety of distractions to be successful in the ring.
In the Calgary and surrounding area there are a few of different venues for both Rally Obedience and Formal Obedience. For Rally Obedience there is: CKC, WCRL, CARO, CWAGS and soon to be UKC options and for Formal Obedience there is: CKC, CWAGS and soon to be UKC Options. This gives handlers the opportunity trial more often and choose organizations that fit them and their dogs preferences.
Currently, Janilee is a WCRL Rally Obedience Judge and a CWAGS Rally Obedience & Obedience Judge. She holds various titles with her dogs in WCRL, CARO, CWAGS and UKC Rally Obedience as well as CWAGS Formal Obedience. These classes are held outside in various locations to help generalize your teams skills with a variety of distractions. These classes will have ‘topics’ to work through but teams are welcome to choose their own focus.
Rally Coursework & Strategy
These classes focus on courses for you and your canine companion to put your skills to the test. Throughout this class we will focus on the tiny strategy pieces needed to continue growing your team. Courses will be made up of WCRL, CARO, CWAGS and UKC Rally signs to keep everyone on their ‘toes’
